Midland Combination Premier Division
Highgate United 0 v 0 Coleshill Town
Coleshill don't get many scoreless draws, this being only the fourth in three seasons, but this game had 0-0 written all over it. Both teams had only one real chance each to snatch the points but that apart, it was a quite night for goalkeepers with neither stopper being overly stretched.
Mick Beadle's side has a settled look about these days and the team that took the field against Highgate would have been a repeat of Saturday's versus Massey but Dan Greaves dropped to the bench due to a question mark over a groin strain, Shaun Kidson taking his place in midfield. The back four (five including the keeper) are building up an understanding between them as they are now unchanged for the fourth consecutive game and look like a unit capable of keeping clean sheets.
Despite their lowly position Highgate competed aggressively, roared on by a coach whose voice could be heard in the club house never mind the pitch. Any team going to the Coppice this season will have to earn the points as they will give nothing away. The game itself was played out in the midfield with very little goalmouth action. Coleshill couldn't reach the heights of their recent performances and although Highgate had the better of things they were restricted to a succession of corners rather than goalscoring opportunities. Coleshill's back line was so well drilled that the home teams forwards were caught offside time and time again but when they did finally break clear No8's weak shot was easily saved by Miles Millington-Day.
Coleshill started to have the better of the play in the second half without carving out the clear cut opportunities. James Dance had a dangerous cross headed clear then Wagstaff took a bending free kick which the keeper had to be sharp to save, then on the hour mark came Coleshill's big chance. From a blocked clearance the ball fell for Michael Campbell who advanced into the box and could have shot himself but elected to pass to Donavan Rowe who had just came on as substitute and with virtually his first touch, spooned the ball over the bar. Des Wilkes made a last ditch saving tackle as Highgate stepped up a pace in the final 20 mins, Day saved as No9 intercepted a Sam Chatwin cross field ball and Simon Bradbury made a great tackle inside his own box to clear for a corner. Coleshill hit back with three corners and Campbell hitting the side netting from the latter. Then Highgate had their own big moment when former Coleshill youth team player Lewis Drinkwater, making his debut, could have made an instant name for himself but dragged his shot just wide of the post with only the keeper to beat. In time added on Shaun Kidson shot over the bar and Day had to punch away a high ball with the return being deflected away for a corner. All in all, a fair result.
Team;- Miles Millington-Day, Alan Wright, Des Wilkes, Simon Bradbury, Sam Chatwin (Myrone Levy), James Dance, Rob Ellis (Donavan Rowe), Shaun Kidson, David Brush (Linzell Taylor), Michael Campbell, Kevin Wagstaff. Subs not used Chris Gee, Dan Greaves.
