Midland Combination Premier Division
Bolehall Swifts 3 v 1 Coleshill Town
Scorer: Michael Campbell.
Manager Mick Beadle was shell shocked at not only losing Chris Gee this week but also club captain Des Wilkes, both players deciding to have "a rest from football", and to make matters worse Shaun Kidson was unavailable due to work committments. Joel Mardenborough made the bench following impressive displays for the reserves.
Coleshill travelled to an in form Bolehall who have a bit of a strangle hold over results against Town and it was the home team who showed first. Rob Ellis nearly put the ball in his own net in the opening minutes but his attempted clearance flew just over the bar. Coleshill seemed to weather the early storm and were slowly coming more into the game as they pinned Swifts back in their own half. Town had a big shout for a penalty when the ball seemed to be handled inside the box but as was to be seen later, Coleshill were going to have to work really hard to get anything from the referee. Campbell shot wide before David Brush was first into the book as his frustration at some decisions spilled over. Swifts took the lead on 23 minutes against the run of play when Sam Chatwin was caught in two minds and his delayed clearance was charged down to leave No4 clear on goal and although Millington-Day got his hands to the ball he couldn't keep the shot out. A Brush free kick found Dan Greaves who's shot was saved at the near post then Swifts centre back Simon Meads somehow squeezed in a cross which hit the bar and went out of play. Campbell charged down an attempted clearance leaving Brush a run at goal but his shot went just wide of the post. Coleshill were enjoying their best spell at this point and a passage of keep ball ended in a fine equaliser. Kevin Wagstaff picked the ball up in midfield and found himself in space with a clever give and go. Wagstaff's inch perfect cross was met by Michael Campbell who headed back across the keeper into the corner of the net. Minutes later and Coleshill should have been infront as Campbell broke free of the defence then went to round the keeper. Coleshill's leading scorer went to ground as the keeper clipped his ankle but amazingly the referee booked Campbell for diving and gave a free kick to the home side.
In the second half Swifts prolific scorer Ian Purvey should have scored with a header and again with a shot that went well wide and Miles Millington-Day tipped over the bar a shot from Swifts goal scorer. On the hour mark Simon Bradbury tussled with Swifts Paul Hathaway but appeared to have cleared the danger but the forward went to ground and Bradbury was given his second yellow of the game and Bolehall awarded a penalty. Hathaway finished for 2-1. Coleshill tried to get back into the game but decisions were still going against them and tempers started to flare. With time running out Coleshill's misery was complete as Rob Ellis had to leave the field after an horrendous tackle which seemingly didn't even warrant a free kick, and whilst down to nine men, waiting to make a substitution, Sam Chatwin defected a cross into his own net. Several Coleshill players had lost the will to live at this point but it was Linzell Taylor who finally allowed his frustration to boil over. His decent received a red card, he struck an opponent followed by more decent before eventually leaving the field. Records show that we rarely beat Swifts for whatever reason but this was a game we had by the throat and was cruely taken away from us.
Team;, Miles Millington-Day, Alan Wright, Sean Burrell, Simon Bradbury, Sam Chatwin, Dan Greaves, Rob Ellis (Carl Smith), Kevin Wagstaff, David Brush (Linzell Taylor), Michael Campbell, James Dance (Joel Mardenborough).
