MIDLAND COMBINATION PREMIER DIVISION
MASSEY FERGUSON 3 v 3 COLESHILL TOWN
Scorers: Lee Dempster 2, Own Goal.
Coleshill finally found some form but still managed only a draw in a game, which they should have won by a handsome margin. Town welcomed back Frank Woodburn who is a miss on the left side of defence, and Craig Risdill made the bench after a long absence through injury.
From the start Lee Dempster was involved in every Coleshill attack and could have ended the game with four or five goals. Dempster shot wide with only three minutes on the clock and Massey replied with a mirror image at the other end. A sweeping move involving Carl Smith and Mitchell Thompson saw a Dempster cross cleared for a corner. In the next passage of play Smith cleverly released Dempster who cut inside two players but his attempted pass into the net with his weaker foot was saved on the line. On 12mins the inevitable happened. As on numerous occasions this season the opposition took the lead completely against the run of play. Massey broke down the left; the incoming cross was cleared straight to the feet of John Woodhouse who, with time and space found the corner of the net. In recent games, this was the point where Coleshill’s heads dropped and confidence drained away, but on this occasion Town hit back within six minutes. Matty Devine swung in a corner, which Mitchell Thompson met at the near post with a deft header. The ball hit the keeper rather than him saving it and the danger was cleared but Frank Woodburn quickly returned the ball into the box where Lee Dempster swivelled to sweep home. Coleshill continued to have the better chances but Massey were starting to have more possession. With 45 mins on the clock the home team launched a hopeful ball into the box. Simon Bradbury tried to control the awkward bounce with his chest only to see the Assistant Referee flag for handball. Justice was seen to be done when Woodhouse shot wide from the spot kick in the last action of the half.
The first half had been entertaining with some good football and plenty of chances but the second started scrappy with neither side controlling play. On 55 mins No 9 cut in from the right across a square back line and scuffed a left foot shot that found the corner of the net alluding Danny Moseley’s full length dive. This was Massey’s best period of the game and another goal would have killed off the visitors but Lee Dempster came to the rescue again. Man of the Match Matty Devine started the move with a defence splitting pass, which released Carl Meah who crossed into the six-yard box for Dempster to tap home again with the right foot. The two forwards combined again in the next attack, which should have seen Coleshill, take the lead. Dempster’s pace took him free down the left and his pass infield saw Meah with a clear sight at goal but he went for power rather than accuracy and his shot went wide. After Massey’s 15 minutes of domination Coleshill were now back on top and got their reward on 80 mins. Meah’s through ball for Devine seemed to be hit too far ahead, but Devine stretched to cut the ball back into the danger area and with Meah and Dempster waiting to pounce a defender diverted the ball into his own net. With the game now won concentration was the name of the game but with 90 minutes on the clock Massey forced a corner. The home team took a short kick and when Coleshill pushed out the incoming cross was met by the unmarked Massey substitute who firmly headed home. There was barely time to restart the game before the final whistle went. Both teams lie just below half way in the league with nothing to play for at this time of the season but they produced an entertaining game with plenty of commitment, and goalmouth action.
Team;- Danny Moseley, Lee O’Brien (Craig Risdill), Allan Thomas, Simon Bradbury, Frank Woodburn, Matty Devine, Carl Smith, Christian Crisp, Mitchell Thompson, Carl Meah, Lee Dempster. Subs not used Tony Gormley.
