MATCH REPORT
By Colin Wheatley
In a match that was always going to be closely fought and reflected recent competitive history, two evenly matched sides were separated by a superb strike from James Harrison, selected in place of Liam Molesworth who was injured in the cup defeat of Highgate the previous Saturday.
On the synthetic pitch under lights at Noose Lane in dry conditions, both teams started briskly with the away side making inroads immediately via Tonge and Sandhu. The home side were stunned in the seventh minute when a pass from Palmer found Harrison unmarked at the edge of the area. A clean hit by the speedy striker gave keeper Arnold no chance giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Sporting’s search for the equaliser was thwarted by some stout defending by the Coleshill back line, with both long balls and crosses being turned away consistently to eleviate any threat. Indeed throughout the first half away keeper Hathaway was never stretched by the home team’s efforts. Once again the Coleshill midfield made it difficult for the opposition to play their forward line into attacking positions, much to the frustration of centre forward McKenzie . Whenever the away side pressed for a second goal , Sporting made rapid counter attacks, particularly via Whittaker on the right wing. However, the Coleshill team’s fitness prevailed each time; they quickly recovered their shape and dealt with the threat.
In the second half the game opened up and became an end to end affair with both sides making strong tackles to deny attempts at goal. Periods of early pressure by Sporting produced several corners that were cleared by the away defence; shots on goal after breakouts by Harrison, Sandu, Tonge and Willis being likewise unfruitful.
On 62minutes Philips was replaced by Washbourne and Whittaker by Jones. At the Warehouse End , excellent tackles by Willis and Mansell kept it at 1-0 and at the Town end shots by both Sandu, after a superb mazy run, and Washbourne both went over the bar.
The last 15 minutes produced nail biting drama as Cameron Stuart made two more substitutions in an attempt to break the second half deadlock with Hendrickson replacing Sandu on 75mins, and Dubidat replacing Harrison on 82 minutes. The tackle count increased dramatically resulting in bookings for Franco and Carter-Byrne. As Sporting made multiple efforts to equalise, a long run into the corner by Tonge bought some time but in his effort to regain the ball inside the six yard box he twisted an ankle and took no further part in proceedings. Willis found the net after good work by Dainty but he was judged to have fouled Howkins in the process. In a frantic last five minutes Coleshill were effectively down to nine players when the industrious Dubidat got injured in a tackle and limped through to the final whistle, although he was still able to make several important one footed interceptions.
The final whistle left the Colemen in second spot in the league behind leaders Halesowen, ahead on goals scored. With five wins in the last five matches , Coleshill play host to Stamford and then away to Sutton Coldfield over the bank holiday weekend.
