Sanders Stars As Coleshill Win
A Roy Sanders hat-trick helped to brighten up Coleshill Town's prospects. Their match against Quarry Bank Celtic was an exciting tussle and the first result for new coach, Graham Penson. Although Coleshill cracked in six goals their defence gave away four but below par refereeing did not help matters and when the visitors final goal rolled in, Peter Garnell was out cold, even so, the goal was allowed to stand, when it seemed the keeper had been handled rather unceremoniously. Coleshill took the field with Clive Lyons taking over the role of centre half, while Stokes found himself as a deep lying forward. Both Stokes and Sanders turned out to be Town's outstanding players with the latter giving one of his old established displays to earn him the reward of a hat-trick. Sanders began his goal scoring mission in te 7th minute when pouncing upon a loose ball between keeper Metcalfe and colleague Warr. Celtic were soon making a strong bid to get level with shrewd combined movements employing both Haden and Allen. But Coleshill held firm, for Stokes, revelling in his new role, supplied plenty of ball to Sanders and company. Steve Ward also came deep into the Town's attack and Celtic were relieved to see Metcalfe make a fine save from Hanlon at the foot of the post. Coleshill extended their lead in the 25th minute when some smart work by Phelps and Stokes ended in the latter sending over a fine cross that Metcalfe failed to hold, Sanders racing in, nodded a bouncing ball straight into the net. The visitors returned the compliments soon afterwards when the ever-dangerous Haden broke clear to centre to Harris to nod neatly home. Quarry Bank, playing far better than their position in the table suggested, saw Coleshill lead 3-1 in the 35th minute, Stokes put Hanlon clear to despatch a perfect cross for Davis to rocket past Metcalfe. The first half ended with Quarry Bank reducing Town's lead with a most unsatisfactory goal by Allen, while Hanlon, with only the keeper to beat, was bowled over in the box, a penalty appeal being ignored. The game resumed with Coleshill going all out to fill the box and after only a few minutes succeeded when Sanders scored a beauty. He left the Celtic defenders floundering before putting Hanlon in possession, who returned across goal for Sanders to head a superb goal. Coleshill were in full cry now and more splendid work by Hanlon and Davis allowed Roy Phelps to beat Metcalfe with a powerful shot. In the next minute, Metcalfe made a fine save from Hanlon. Coleshill continued to push the Celtic defence around almost at will, and it was no surprise when Phelps recieved from Sanders to fire in another fierce drive past the overworked Metcalfe. The visitors defence was being besieged by Coleshill's goal hungry attack and their goal bore a charmed life as good efforts by Davis and Phelps struck the woodwork. It was the final seven minutes of injury time that let Coleshill's fine display down, but furthermore, it was weak handling by the official that led to late goals by Celtic's Harris and Allen, Garnell being knocked out before the last goal was actually signalled.
