Youngsters Help Town Combat Difficulties
On Saturday Coleshill were faced with the task of playing Quarry Bank Celtic minus eight regular players, all injured or not available. Four of the newly signed players were unable to turn out and it was a strange looking side which took to the field. Lynton Bradley being in goal, while Peter Garnell filled the inside left position. Despite these difficulties, Town gained a 4-1 victory, their first at Quarry Bank in five years and the match opened with young Roger Masters almost giving Coleshill the lead. Malcolm Phelps, another emergency inclusion in Town’s team, paved the way for Garnell to shoot, custodian Metcalfe making a fine save. The experienced Celtic side gained the initiative, but Statham, Clive Lyons and Roy Phelps, older brother of Malcolm, were magnificent in defence, Martin Curtis and Dave Back were also prominent in keeping Quarry Bank at bay. After 15 minutes Celtic’s Whetton was upended in the penalty area and Round fired home from the resulting spot kick. Town fought back, Hanlon, Masters and O’Riordan all going close with good shots. In the 32nd minute Coleshill equalised, Roy Phelps firing the ball home following good work by Masters and Garnell. Quarry Bank regained control but made little impression against Town’s rearguard and in the second half Town applied pressure, almost scoring on several occasions. After 65 minutes Coleshill were rewarded, Roy Phelps heading Back’s throw-in against the crossbar for O’Riodan to hammer a shot into the net. Coleshill brought on substitute Kevin Garbett for Malcolm Phelps and the newcomer made his presence felt with two dangerous centres. With Lyons commanding midfield, Town maintained the ascendancy. In the 76th minute Garbett beat three players in a brilliant run, only to be brought down in the box. Roy Phelps increased Coleshill’s lead from the penalty spot. Celtic defended desperately as Town surged forward and with five minutes remaining, Hanlon completed the scoring with a great left footed effort.
