COLESHILL CHRONICLE WROTE
Coleshill Finish Season On Bright Note

Coleshill ended their season on a bright note on Saturday when they claimed both points in a Midland Combination Second Division game against Alvechurch Reserves. Coleshill opened well and young Masters was responsible for keeping the home defenders busy with his quick thinking moves which were aided by Phelps, Hanlon and company. Alvechurch goal had a narrow escape when, following a Martin Curtis free kick, several shots rebounded off defenders before another drive slipped by Siviter only to be kicked clear by Hurran. Coleshill were taking play deep into the home half and Alvechurch were lucky again when a mix up saw Garbett send the ball towards an open goal only for defender Lines to dash back and hook it clear. Alvechurch were given only chances of brief attacks on the Coleshill goal, their best move being shared by Shaw and Chandler, who saw Moore’s cross headed in by Chandler for Comley to push onto the bar, from where Bache kicked Shaw’s drive clear. Owen was looking strong on his debut in the Town’s defence and crowned a near perfect display by a great tackle and clearance when Chandler looked poised to open Alvechurch’s account. Coleshill finished the first half with a fine attack built up by the Hanlon brothers and Phelps that ended with masters crashing in a drive that Siviter saved in great style. He could not completely hold the ball and it needed the help of Berry. It required another fine save by the Alvechurch keeper to prevent Coleshill from taking the lead and the home goal had another let-off when an intended back-pass to his keeper by Hurren went astray and the ball passed inches wide of the vacant net. The goal that was to seal Alvechurch’s fate arrived in the 71st minute, Hanlon broke clear to brush past several defenders before crossing the ball to find Siviter stopping Masters from meeting it, but powerless to do anything about Garbett’s perfectly placed shot. Coleshill thus ran out time to finish worthy winners and hope that their recent discoveries will be around when the 1971-72 season gets under way.
