Cherry Earns Replay For Sports

Coleshill Town and Shustoke Sports fought a goalless draw in the Semi Final of the Coleshill Charity Cup at Coleshill Hall. Shustoke, from the First Division of the Mercian A.F.A, played well against their Midland Combination Division Two rivals and good rearguard work earned them a replay.
Coleshill’s lack of finishing power and Shustoke’s fine defensive work were the decisive factors in this Coleshill Charity Cup Semi-Final match. Although being under pressure for most of the game, Sports deserved to draw, well served by goalkeeper Mick Cherry, who made four great saves. Owing to injuries, Coleshill were forced to reshuffle their side. Sports fought hard, but Coleshill had the better chances and only lack of determination prevented them from scoring. After the interval especially, Town were dominant and Sports were indebted to full-backs Russell and Wheeler. Shots from Geoff Statham and Roy Phelps hit the woodwork as Coleshill surged forward and Phelps had two efforts blocked on the line. Town occasionally left their defence open to the quick counter attack, Shustoke’s Nigel Ensor being dangerous. Clive Lyons shone at the back for Coleshill. Sports continued to fight a rearguard action and with Cherry distinguishing himself on many occasions, they earned a replay at Coleshill Hall’s ground, this Monday (April 26) kick off 6.30pm.
