Coleshill Make Sure With Eight Goals
Coleshill Town, last season’s Midland Combination Second Division Champions, stormed their way into the Final of the Coleshill Charity Cup with a shattering win over Mercian Amateur League side Shustoke Sports on Monday night. Coleshill, who were forced to replay their semi-final tie with Shustoke after drawing 0-0, made certain of a place in the Final in no uncertain manner. Shustoke fought bravely but were outclassed by a much faster and experienced Coleshill side. The Town would have reached double figures had not goalkeeper Mick Cherry been on top form for the Mercian League side. He pulled off a series of saves but even his skill between the posts failed to prevent Coleshill powering their way to a 4-0 interval lead. Coleshill took the lead after 12 minutes when Roy Phelps hammered a Hanlon cross into the net. Two minutes later Coleshill extended their lead when Phelps placed home a Sanders corner. Shustoke were rarely in a position to threaten the Coleshill back line and goal number three came in the 25th minute. Phelps pushed the ball up the left wing where Sanders raced, and his cross was cracked home by “Butch” Bradley. Coleshill continued to press hard and Bradley added his second and gave Coleshill a 4-0 lead. The second half opened with Shustoke forward Keith Way storming his way towards goal, but with only keeper Comley to beat his shot went wide. Phelps made it 5-0 in the 52nd minute and further goals by Frank Baird 2, and Bradley completing the scoring.
