Coleshill Just Scrape Home

A John Bown goal 10 minutes from time pushed Coleshill into the Semi Final of the Presidents Cup. Coleshill played very much below their usual form and only Garnell, fresh back after injury, Allen and Bown emerged with any honours from a disappointing match. Les Owen was ruled out with an ankle injury and after a shaky start, Pete Garnell showed his old class in goal. Up front, Phil Dunn and Bobby Whillock, hat trick hero of the previous week, were very subdued. Coleshill were given a scare in the opening minutes when Garnell lost possession in front of Gibbs, but a timely interception by Geoff Statham cleared the danger. John Allen was conspicuous in midfield and had a couple of good shots well saved by Smith. After Lewis had gone close for Northfield, Coleshill missed a simple chance to take the lead. John Bown sent the ball inches wide of an open goal and then Phelps just failed to get his head to a fine cross from Deeming. Play continued on an even keel in the second half with both keepers having no difficulty in dealing with what little shooting there was. In the 58th minute, Town squandered another easy chance when Bown slipped the ball to the unmarked Hanlon, whose shot hit a post. Back came Northfield and after Tucker had headed inches over, he brought out a great save from Garnell with a power-packed shot. As time ticked away and a replay looked inevitable, Coleshill grabbed the goal which put them in the Semi-Final to face Astwood Bank. A Hanlon right-wing corner dropped in a packed goalmouth and John Bown hammered it wide of Smith.
