Brave Sports Fight To No Avail

Coleshill retained the Coleshill Charity Cup, but they were given a much tougher fight that they expected by a game Shustoke Sports side from the Mercian A.F.A. First Division. Shustoke got the start they needed when Mal Jones climbed to meet a Nigel Ensor corner and head in, following a mix-up between Deeming and Owen in Coleshill’s defence. Town soon equalised when Johnny Allen, who was Man Of The Match, struck a well-judged through ball for Bobby Whillock to run on to and give keeper Mick Cherry no chance. Coleshill went ahead just before half time, when Phil Dunn’s header from a Hanlon corner seemed to take a deflection from a defender. It seemed virtually all over when Cherry palmed an overhead kick from John Bown into the path of Eddie Hanlon to increase Coleshill’s lead. But Sports refused to lie down and with Mathew Ensor shining in midfield, reduced the arrears, Jones nodding down a Keith Way corner for Bob Allen to hammer home. Twice Shustoke forwards were sent clear of Coleshill’s defence, only to be pulled back for very close offside decisions. It seemed they might snatch an equaliser, but Whillock made the game safe for Coleshill scoring via a post from another Hanlon cross. A great fighting performance from Shustoke, who were far from disgraced. They played well as a team and looked dangerous up front. Particularly the skilful Allen. Coleshill did just enough to win, with Johnny Allen and Eddie Hanlon outstanding.



Think this is the last game of the season but there might be League games still to come.
