Town Starlets Shine In Victory

Coleshill gave a magnificent team effort to beat Highgate and ease their re-election worries - this despite losing experienced striker Malcolm Phelps to Worcester City. Johnny Allcock took over as the central striker, flanked by Coleshill's two young starlets Gary Shaw and Barrie Canning. Colin Holder master-minded many fine moves and Highgate never really got to grips with more enthusiastic opponents, after an initial opening burst. In this short period, Coleshill's keeper Peter King saved bravely at the feet of Hare and Mason, while Taylor missed an easy chance to put the homesters ahead, but Coleshill settled down and both Allcock and Canning saw shots go just off target. On the half hour, Coleshill's pressure almost paid off, when Nabbs and Holder combined to tee the ball up for Shaw, but his shot bounced off Highgate keeper Martyn Williams and the danger cleared. In the 37th minute Highgate's Raithby gave away a penalty, when he brilliantly saved a shot from Allcock. From the spot kick Nabbs shot straight at Williams, but the referee ordered the kick to be retaken and this time Holder made no mistake to put Coleshill in front. Seconds later, Coleshill were unlucky not to go further in front as Shaw just failed to get to a low cross from Allcock at the far post. Nicklin failed to put Highgate level, shooting wide from close range and at the start of the second half the homesters threatened to get back in the running, but again Coleshill's work-rate held them in good stead and Dight and Brayley set up several promising attacks. Shaw excelleld with his trickery and the youngster was always willing to have a crack at goal. It was no surprise when he made it 2-0 slotting the ball past Williams, following a swift attack involving Canning and Allcock. This success gives Coleshill 16 points, one more than their total last season and they now look forward to meeting Paget Rangers (who they have already beaten this season) at Pack Meadow this Saturday.
