First game of the 2022/2023 season, on a blistering hot day, away to Corby where the Colemen rarely get a good result, two Red cards and a scrambled goal saw Corby come out on top.
Coleshill fielded a pretty much full side with Taylor Byrne returning from a brief stint at Hednesford, Jamie Ashmore making his debut and keeper Paul Hathaway making his 395th appearance.
The game started slowly, as you would expect in the conditions, with neither side bothering their opponents keeper. Amarvir Sandhu came the closest as his run into the box ended with a shot being deflected for a corner. It was Sandhu again who created the next chance as he found Kai Tonge and although the striker rounded the keeper he left himself a tight angle and his shot at an empty net went wide. In reply a fine run and shot by Dunckley hit the side netting. George Washbourne was causing the home defence problems down the right flank. Two of his efforts forced a corner then a shot going just past the post. After a drinks break Coleshill continued to have the better chances, Amarvir Sandu heading wide at the far post from a Fraser Doyle deep cross. The home side were then reduced to 10 men in a bazaar incident. Taylor Byrne was fouled but with no whistle coming he then fouled his opponent, the referee then awarded a free kick to Corby. Liam Molesworth was venting his frustration at the ref and standing in front of the ball preventing the kick being taken. From fully 20 yards away Dunckley rushed over and pushed Molesworth to the ground with two hands leaving the referee no alternative but to send him off! Coleshill obviously sensed an opportunity and powered forward but a powerful shot from Amarvir Sandhu was well saved by home keeper Alexander (probably the tallest keeper in this league), and a goal bound effort by Kai Tonge was blocked by a defender.
Half time Corby 0-0 Coleshill
Coleshill started the second half brightly with again George Washbourne in the thick of the action. His shot from a corner was saved by Alexander’s feet, then a mazy run into the box almost opened up the defence but in the end he was crowded out. The game started to slowly change with the home side creating some pressure mainly due to the constant threat of Florian who never stopped running and battling all afternoon. The warning signs came as GK Paul Hathaway made his first save of the day from Florian, pushing his effort away for a corner. Just after the hour mark that pressure told as Florian scored the only goal of the game, a scramble in the six yard box following a corner and Florian was on hand to poke the loose ball home from a yard out. Coleshill hit back immediately with an absolute beauty shot from George Washbourne but Alexander stretched his full length to tip the ball round the post for a corner. Molesworth and Florian both found themselves in the book for a silly minor squirmish on the halfway line which was to prove pivotal for Florian later on. Coleshill tried to get back into the tie but it was the home side then that looked the more likely to score. Florian had a shot saved by Hathaway and he also had the ball in the net but it was given offside. In the dying seconds Man of the Match Florian was shown a second yellow card after stupidly kicking the ball away and so Corby ended the game with Nine men but more importantly Three points!
A disappointing afternoon for Coleshill but they can quickly put it right as they entertain Gresley Rovers at Pack Meadow on Monday night 7.45 kick off!
