Shifnal Town 0 v 2 Coleshill Town
Scorers: Ben Porter 27, James Dance 65.
Three wins in a row have taken Coleshill into the top ten but this was easily the most convincing win against a team currently lying in fifth position and up until today hadn't lost at home in the league. The performance wasn't spectacular but it was professional. The defence was solid and never gave the Shifnal forwards a sniff. The forwards always looked like they had goals in them, and the whole team worked as a unit to deny the opposition time and space. A well deserved round of applause awaited the team as they left the field from the travelling support.
Neil Kitching and Martin Sockett continued their record of tinkering with the team as they access their growing squad. New signing Jae Martin came straight in for his first start in Coleshill's colours, Lee Bloxham being rested. Ant Hall returned after illness and replaced Kitching with Richard Munday taking the sweeper role despite feeling ill himself that morning. Damien Charie was on the bench allowing Danny Carter to get 90 minutes with the reserves along side Michael Campbell.
Shifnal started confidently as you would expect with their record at home and two good results against Coleshill already this season, but the early chances fell to Coleshill. Matty Robinson knocked back a deep free kick for Richard Munday to head wide and Simon Volante sent a rasping shot over the bar. Shifnal forward Ben Jevons had impressed in the games at Pack Meadow but he was in a deeper role and struggled to get into the game. Ramone Stephens showed good skills but was restricted to shots from well outside the box. Coleshill nearly took the lead on 25 mins when a long sweeping cross from Tom Starkey eluded everyone including the home keeper leaving Matty Robinson with a clear sight of goal but the leading goalscorers weak left foot effort was cleared off the line by Shifnal's man of the match Richard Brown. It only took another couple of minutes for Coleshill to find the net as Robinson released Ben Porter with a fine through ball and the in form striker finished confidently against his former club. Coleshill's back three were in command of everything coming straight at them but Shifnal's wide man, Craig Gregg was causing problems with first a cross and then a shot that went just over the bar.
Shifnal tried desperatley to get back into the game at the start of the second half and after a goal mouth scramble Neil Barnfield lifted an effort over the bar when well placed infront of goal. Coleshill were pressurising the ball all over the field forcing mistakes. The home keeper sliced a clearance which went for a corner and Ant Hall headed the kick just wide. On 65 mins Coleshill increased their lead. James Dance went up to challenge the keeper who looked favourite to catch an Ant Hall free kick but the ball dropped to Damien Charie who rolled the ball back to Dance. The skipper then lifted the ball over the diving keeper into the net. Dance sent a defence splitting pass through to Robinson who on another day would have bagged at least a brace, but this time he shot straight at the keeper. Shifnal's best chance fell to Craig Gregg who lobbed Craig Johnson in the Coleshill goal but somehow the stopper scrambled back to claw the ball off the line and Coleshill's man of the match Richard Munday was on hand to clear the danger.
A fine win, on a par with the result against Coalville. Four wins in six games, three in a row. Oadby coming up next and Alvechurch next saturday. With Michael Campbell and Danny Carter also finding the net for the reserves, Dave Davies almost fit again and another new signing in Chris Charles, the management team have options and a confident, bubbling squad to chose from.
Team: Craig Johnson, Ant Hall, Richard Munday, Lee Hunt, Tom Starkey, Jae Martin, Simon Volante, James Dance, Matty Robinson, Ben Porter (Damien Charie), Nathan Pulisciano. Subs not used Josh McPherson, Lee Bloxham, Stuart Hendrie, Neil Kitching.
