Coventry Sphinx 1 v 2 Coleshill Town

Postby Alan Beckett » Tue Apr 26, 2011 2:30 pm

Monday 25th April 2011
Baker Joiner Midland Alliance
Coventry Sphinx 1 2 Coleshill Town
Scorers:
Sphinx: Luke Williams 74 (pen).
Town: Jon Powis 16, 29.
Attendance:

It used to be that Coleshill always lost to Sphinx but they are having a poor season by their standards, four places and twenty points behind Coleshill, and Town thoroughly deserved this win in a game where the slight slope and surprisingly strong wind made it a game of two halves, Coleshill 2-0 up at the break and Sphinx fighting back with the advantage in the second half.

Coleshill could have been ahead before they broke the deadlock on 16 minutes as they enjoyed the better of the opening period. Manager Carl Adams was encouraging his side to hang the ball up under the bar due to the wind and the slight statue of the home keeper. Richard Allen did just that with a free kick and when the keeper flapped at the cross both Jason Ramsey and Jon Powis were on hand to put the ball in the net, with Powis just getting the final touch. Coleshill took a two goal advantage just before the half hour mark as Neil Kitching worked an opening inside the box and fed Jason Ramsey who, with back to goal, moved the ball on again to Powis who turned and shot at the same time giving the keeper no chance. Both sides were missing important players, probably due to the Bank Holiday, but both sides were up for it even though there was very little resting on the result. Sphinx worked hard in the first half but rarely troubled Craig Johnson in the Town goal.

Sphinx stepped up the pressure in the second half with former Town player Luke Williams more of a threat as he pushed onto the last man. The home side had much more of the game but still didn't put Johnson under any great pressure but they did manage to score, from the penalty spot, with just 15 minutes remaining. Johnson went down at the feet of a forward and looked to have gathered the ball although the man did go down. The Referee waved play on but the Assistant put his flag across his chest for a penalty. Williams converted. Sphinx did have another few half chances, especially when their two centre halves came forward for corners or free kicks but Coleshill held on for the three points to overtake their total from last season with a game to play. (Although with an extra team in the league Town will have played two more games than they did last year).

Team: Craig Johnson, Jason Lanns, Loyiso Recci, Levi Bailey, Steve Hakner, Ryan Duxbury, Jon Powis, Richard Allen, Chris Gumery, Neil Kitching (Ben Porter), Jason Ramsey. Subs not used Carl Adams, Michael William.
