Last game of the season and the 101st meeting between these sides. Highgate were well up for it as you can imagine from a side needing the win to avoid finishing third bottom. Coleshill on the other hand looked nervous. Town were secure, safe from the drop but they played as though they expected to get beat and given the recent history between the sides, I suppose that was understandable, only four wins and eleven defeats in the last 20 meetings.
Although Highgate had the vast majority of possession it was Coleshill who carved out the best chances. Steve Hakner had a great shot well saved but Gate responded when No10 was clean through on goal but Chris Jay made a fine save. Liam Mansell had a header cleared off the line and out for a corner and when the cross came in Steve Hakner rose unchallenged to glance into the corner for the lead on 37mins. From another corner, took short this time, Chris Lloyd saw his effort from just outside the box hit the bar. Jay saved well again this time from No11, then Lloyd had a goalbound free kick tipped over the bar.
Highgate stepped up a gear in the second half as Coleshill dropped deeper and deeper in an effort to see the game out and defend their slim lead. Former Town player Daniel Dineen hit the post with a header, Coleshill defended desperately and twice cleared off the line as Gate's pressure increased. Goalscorer Steve Hakner then had a rush of blood to the head and was sent off for kicking the ball away, his second yellow. The first card came from a hand bags skirmish that Hakner was singled out for punishment but the referee should have put a couple of Gate names in the book as well. Coleshill reshuffled to shore up the defence but Gate kept coming. No15 hit the post with a diving header before Lloyd nearly sealed the game as he was denied finishing off the best move of the game by a desperate block. No4 shot just wide then Allando Davis shifted the ball from right to left which gave him room to shoot but his effort went just wide of the post. Another great piece of defending denied Gate the equaliser as Coleshill twice cleared off the line but just as Town thought they had weathered the storm Gate came back again and from a corner Karl King stooped to head home through a sea of legs, 1-1. Neither side could find a winner in the minutes that remained but a point was better for Coleshill than their visitors.
At this level of football the up's and down's at the end of every season very much depend on the leagues above. The rules state that a team will be promoted from the Mid Com and the West Mids Prem and two sides will get relegated, that will be Willenhall and Atherstone. But, the Leicestershire league's champions (East Midlands) have to go some where, so that could be a third relegation and if other teams are demoted from above, the summer could be very interesting. I know from experience that the Midland Alliance sometimes have to take teams that they otherwise wouldn't normally and that they have a difficult job, but a rumour I heard on saturday is that the league have already decided that three teams will go down, the two as stated and then one other but not Highgate! Seemingly a team that has failed it's ground grading will go! If that's the case, 1. The league should not be telling a team they will be safe no matter what, and 2. Why should a team be relegated for facilities rather than their league placing! Only a rumour, but if true it smacks of the league picking and choosing who they want to stay and who they want to go! Since when has football been about who's backside your can lick!
SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
Karl King scored a late equaliser for Highgate United at Coleshill Town after Steve Hakner had opened the scoring.
COLESHILL HERALD WROTE
Coleshill ended a difficult campaign with a share of the spoils against bogey side Highgate United. The visitors came into the game needing a result to stay outside the bottom two and achieved their goal. Highgate had the vast majority of possession in the first half but it was Coleshill who carved out the best chances. Steve Hakner had a great shopt well saved and Liam Mansell had a header cleared off the line. It was Coleshill who opened the scoring as hakner rose unchallenged to glance into the corner on 37 minutes. The home side looked to crank up the pressure and from another corner, Chris Lloyd hit the bar. Highgate stepped up a gear in the second half as Coleshill dropped deeper and deeper in an effort to see the game out and defend their slender lead. Former Coleshill ace Daniel Dineen hit the post with a header before goalscorer Hakner then had a rush of blood to the head and was sent off for kicking the ball away. Coleshill reshuffled to shore up the defence but Highgate pressed for a goal and it finally came as Karl King stooped to head home through a sea of legs.
Coleshill's final tally is:
Played 42 Won 14, Drew 8, Lost 20, Goals For 55, Goals Against 73, Points 50, Position 17 from 22.
Easily their poorest performance in the Midland Alliance, 15 points and 5 positions worse than last season.
