Spirited Show Earns Borough The Points

A dogged, spirited performance by Solihull Borough against an experienced Coleshill Town side, earned the visitors a deserved Midland Combination victory on Saturday. Solihull started the game at a furious pace and played attractive football with midfield man Jimmy Hall prompting his forwards who blitzed the Coleshill goal continually for ten minutes with a series of shots and corners. Johnny Day came close to scoring with his chip that left the Coleshill keeper stranded but his effort was headed off the line by Bishop, the Coleshill full back. Solihull took the lead with a goal from Steve Hawkins when he beat the advancing keeper with a well placed shot after being put through the centre by livewire Chris Seaton. Solihull then lost the services of Johnny Day with a serious ankle injury and he was taken to hospital by ambulance after being stretchered off the field. The loss disrupted Borough's flowing football and Coleshill came more into the game. It was Coleshill who levelled the scores ten minutes into the second half when Polack hit a tremendous 30 yard volley which the Borough keeper Evans pushed onto the bar only to see the ball rebound off his body and into the net. Solihull's fighting spirit continued and sterling defensive work by Dave Cahill prompted his forwards and Walker headed a Hawkins cross against the bar for Seaton to follow up with a timely header. Coleshill also continued to press forward and their powerful centre forward Martin levelled the scores with a close range shot. The Borough were awarded in the last minute when Man Of The Match Hawkins hit an angled shot into the corner of the net to give the visitors both points.
