NON LEAGUE PAPER WROTE
Mannion Proves The Difference

Coleshill got their first win of the season and ended Berko's unbeaten run that stretched back to New Year's day. A first half goal from Ethan Mannion with a good shot that beat Xavi in the Berko goal proved the difference between the teams. Daniel Tymon was sent off for the visitors for a second Yellow card. Coleshill (This should be Berkhamsted) began to dominate and substitute Eric Lopes thought he had equalised but the assistant ruled Lewis Toomey offside. Substitute Josh Willis brought down Lopes for a penalty but Paul Hathaway dived well to his right to save the spot kick by Toomey at the canal end. Both sides hit the post in the second half, but Coleshill clung on to claim a vital three points.

COLESHILL POST WROTE
Berkhamsted were top of the league when last season came to an abrupt halt due to Covid 19 and are expected to push for promotion this term.Coleshill started well and deservedly took the lead with a strike from Ethan Mannion. Unfortunately Town midfielder Danny Tymon was sent off for a second yellow card just before half time. Coleshill defended magnificently but had their fair share of luck. The home side had the ball in the net but it was ruled out for off side. Super Coleshill keeper Paul Hathaway saves a penalty and the woodwork came to the rescue twice but the performance deserved that but of luck.

MATCH REPORT

It's been a tough couple of games for Coleshill taking on two of the promotion favourites but they have proved that they can compete with the best despite their squad being stretched to the limit. Berkhamsted were top of the league when Covid 19 brought an early end to the 2019/20 season and must have been confident of a promotion place had the season been completed. Coleshill lost both games with the Comrades last season but did enjoy a 1-0 success in a first meeting back in 2018.
This was a game that had everything with both sides giving their all in a very entertaining game. Coleshill started off very brightly and had the first couple of chances. Ethan Mannion hit a free kick wide and a shot by Sam McLintock wasn't very far away. Shay Palmer headed a dangerous cross away as Berkhamsted stepped up the pace but it was Coleshill who broke the deadlock on the half hour mark. Ethan Mannion hit a sweet left foot shot that took a deflection off a defender that took the ball away from the diving home keeper and into the net. Coleshill were in the ascendancy now influential midfielder Danny Tymon had a shot that wasn't too far away. Tymon had missed a lot of games through injury and suspension and it was good to have him back in within a minute of his shot he saw Yellow with a typical strong challenge. In an excellent encounter the home side pushed forward and Gio Dainty cleared an effort off the goal line with a header. Four minutes before the break the luxury of having Tymon in the team ended in an all too familiar way as another strong challenge warranted another yellow and two of them mean you are Off! The Comrades almost took immediate advantage as Kirkpatrick shot at goal but Paul Hathaway was up to the challenge. What a long second 45 minutes it was going to be!
Half Time Berkhamsted 0 v 1 Coleshill Town
No substitutions but a change in formation and a solid two lines of four and one up top was the order of the day! Coleshill needed something to hang on to and they so nearly got it when an Ethan Mannion free kick went just past the post. That was Mannion's last contribution as he was replaced by Josh Willis to shore up the midfield. The home side smelt blood and they started to pile forward. Bangura sent a cross along the six yard line and the League's highest scorer last season Toomey only had to tap the ball into the net but his little flick somehow went past the far post. Kirkpatrick shot over the bar and in a rare visit in the home 18 yard box Kai Tonge had a header saved. Berkhamsted had the ball in the net when a shot from Lopes found the corner but amazingly the Assistant Referee held up his flag and the effort was ruled out for offside. It was all hands to the pumps and Josh Willis appeared to win the ball cleanly to clear yet another attack but the Referee pointed to the spot. Was this about to open the floodgates. Up stepped Toomey who struck his spot kick well be he hadn't reckoned on ACE PENALTY SAVER Paul Hathaway with the Coleshill stopper flinging himself across goal to push the effort clear. Breath again! Lone striker Kai Tonge was still causing problems for the home defence with his pace and he had a fabulous chance to double the lead but keeper Xavi saved well and than made an easier save from Sam McLintock. The Comrades had raid after raid but the Coleshill defence held out with a little luck and a lot of solid hard work. Again Tonge got free and this time he had loads of time but when he eventually went for goal the effort came back off the post, so, so close to closing out the game. Kirkpatrick straight at Hathaway, then the Town keeper pushed out a shot from Bangura out for a corner. With seconds left a shot from Lopes was touched by Hathaway and the ball smashed off the post and Berkhamsted new it just wasn't their day.
What a second half performance by the boys in Red. The Colemen haven't had much luck this season so far but it all came in this game but it has to be said they thoroughly deserved it with their sheer hard work.

BERKHAMSTED 0 COLESHILL TOWN 1

Report by Grant Hastie and Martin Hicks

Considering the rain, the Broadwater pitch was in excellent condition and the crowd were well entertained, particularly after the interval. It was a game that the Comrades could well have won but Coleshill, reduced to ten men late in the first half, defended doggedly to frustrate the home side. Berkhamsted started on the front foot, moving the ball swiftly and creating early pressure.

A speculative cross from Lewis Toomey appeared to strike Coleshill defender Sam McLintock on the hand. The referee waved away claims for a penalty from the Berkhamsted players, showing the handball law interpretation is controversial well below Premier League status. Sloppy play at the back by the Comrades allowed Joseph Halsall an opportunity from outside the box, shooting inches wide of Xavi Comas-Leon’s right hand post.

Good build-up play between Alex Witham and Lewis Toomey put Alie Bangura through on goal. His foot appeared to be clipped by a defender as he attempted to shoot but again the referee again waved play on. Mid-way through the first half, the Berkhamsted defence was put under pressure and could not clear the ball. After several blocked shots, a deflected strike from Ethan Mannion beat Xavi Leon, low to the right and into the corner of the net.

Some crude challenges from Daniel Tynon for the visitors eventually saw him sent off, with the foul on Witham being the final straw for the referee. At half time centre back Charlie Briggs came off injured and Berko brought on Eric Lopes for a more attacking formation against the 10 men.

Early in the second half, Bangura ran at the Coleshill defence and hit a great cross which Toomey missed by a matter of inches. Slick passing between home debutant Lucas Kirkpatrick and Bangura saw the ball drop to substitute Eric Lopes on the edge of the Coleshill penalty area. Lopes turned a couple of times outside the box before firing his shot into the far corner of the net. Unfortunately, the assistant referee had flagged for a very tight off-side decision against Toomey who was in the goalkeeper’s line of sight.

Substitute Josh Willis brought down Lopes as he turned to shoot for a penalty, but Hathaway dived well to his right to save Toomey’s spot kick at the canal end. At the other end, Berkhamsted were nearly caught out by a quick counter-attack as Kai Tonge broke clear, his low shot hitting the inside of the post and bouncing clear.

The Comrades kept up the pressure on the Coleshill goal, with Lopes hitting the woodwork with a shot. In the closing stages, Max Farrelly headed narrowly over the bar as Berkhamsted could not make their dominance count and Coleshill clung on to claim a vital three points.

Berko: Comas-Leon; Neufville, Cooper (Verney), Farrelly, Spaul, Doolan, Briggs (Lopes), L Toomey, Witham (Swales), Bangura. Subs not used – C Toomey & Murphy.
