CASTLE BROMWICH NEWS WROTE
Phelps Duo Sinks Poor Chelmsley

Coleshillswept through to meet Sutton Town in the Semi Finals of the Sutton Coldfield Charity Cup. Two goals up in the first five minutes, they did just enough to keep Chelmsley out, although had the home side taken their chances, the result might have been closer. A bitter, ill tempered feud ended with much depleted Coleshill on the winning side for the first time this season in FOUR confrontations. They deserved to win because they were the more competent all round side. The defence was adequate and the forwards sharp, while Chelmsley's back line was anything but safe and the forwards seldom knew the way to goal. Between them, the Phelps brothers, Roy and Mal, destroyed Chelmsley. Roy was tireless in midfield, covering every inch of the pitch and stamping class and authority in everything he did. Malcolm, the promising young striker who has attracted the attention of several leading clubs, was ever quick to spot an opening and helped himself to a couple of goals. Chelmsley did not offer a great deal. Only Geoff Page looked the part in defence and player-manager Tony Tonks played his heart out. If his colleagues around him had shown as much endeavour, they might have won. Matches between these two sides are always keenly contested and Tuesday's was no exception. But sometimes players over stepped the mark, and Referee Brian Baker had to caution three of them. Tommy Cunningham and Chris Shovell went into one book following an exchange of fists, and Coleshill's Tim Rawlings joined them for an offence off the ball. Quicksilver Mal Phelps dispatched Steve Briscoe's cross to put Coleshill ahead after two minutes. Roy Phelps obliged with the second from a Rawlings free kick and the visitors were virtually hame and dry. In one of their few reprisal raids which looked promising, Chelmsley almost pulled a goal back, but keeper John Capper made a brilliant full length save from Eamon Kenna. On the hour Mal Phelps grabbed his second goal which made a mockery of Chelmsley's defensive wall. Page felled Briscoe on the edge of the area and goalkeeper Goddard, directing the wall in front of him, ordered it to move to his left. the five men shuffled across and Phelps calmly hammered the ball into the net at the exact spot where the wall had been. That finished the game as a contest and ensured Coleshill of a Simi Final place against Sutton Town, current leaders of the Midland Combination First Division, at Paget Rangers fround, Walmley, on Friday, May 4th. In the other Semi Final, Paget play Birmingham A.F.A. outfit Parkfield.
