Coleshill had been in the Midland Combination's top division for 25 years but following relegation for the first time in the club's history, manager Colin Strong started his first full season in charge in Division 1. Town lost the first two games but a run of eight straight wins took them to the top of the league and there they stayed for most of the season but a poor run including just six wins in the last fourteen games, in which they failed to score in five of them, saw Coleshill fade away to finally finish fourth. But Coleshill were promoted back to the Premier League at the first attempt, along side Shirley Town as Champions and runners-up County Sports. Third placed Knowle were not promoted due to the lack of floodlights, so the fact that Coleshill had, at great expense, installed floodlights back in 1997, assisted in them being promoted, by default!
